Singapore – On July 26-30, 2017, students from all over the ASEAN region and China will gather in Singapore for the Asian Student Leadership Conference 2017 with the theme, “Hope, Humanity, and Opportunity (H2O)”.
At this year’s ASLC, close to 300 participants will be coming from various countries such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos and China. The 5-day conference is specifically designed to instill the importance of being a leader and a changemaker in one’s own community for youths aged 14-22 years old through various indoor and outdoor activities that will develop their public speaking, critical thinking, collaboration, empathy, and compassion.
This year’s theme is inspired by the many social issues that children around the world are facing. While the youth are considered vulnerable to many environmental, political, and socio-economic disadvantages, the organizers of the conference believe in the untapped and limitless potential of today’s young people in making a stand against injustice, apathy, and inequality in their own schools, communities, and countries. They will learn from prominent speakers and experts such as Mr. Alfie Othman, Head of the Singapore Center for Social Enterprise which is instrumental to the growth of social entrepreneurship in Singapore, Mr. Josephus Tan, Director at Fortis Law Corporation, and a Singapore Youth Award 2015 recipient who is famous for his pro-bono legal work for the less privileged, and Mr. Prasoon Kumar, Co-founder and CEO of billionBricks which tackles homelessness head on.
The participants will get the chance to learn and think through about the various issues around the region in the group discussion, upon which they are required to come up with social enterprise ideas to tackles these issues. They are mentored by industry experts, and to present their envisioned social enterprise ideas to a qualified panel of judges who will determine which ideas are the best when it comes to self-improvement, effort, personal achievement, and potential capabilities. Upon returning to the home country, all participants are encouraged to implement their ideas. Winners for this implementation competition will be invited to ASLC 2018 to receive the award and to share their experiences and tips to next year’s participants.
ASLC is supported by The Lee Foundation, The Singapore Scout Association, The Noble Network Pte Ltd and the National Youth Council (NYC). NYC is glad to support this event to provide youths with the opportunity to tackle societal issues and make a positive difference to the community.
