Thrane & Thrane wins software upgrade for Inmarsat Global Area Network
Thrane & Thrane has been awarded a contract by Inmarsat for upgrading and adding new functionality to its Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN). The contract valued at DKK 25 million, is already under development with Thrane & Thrane’s systems division and the full feature set is expected to be available on Inmarsat’s network during 2011.

BGAN is the foundation for Inmarsat’s existing high-speed data and voice services for the land mobile (BGAN), maritime (FleetBroadband) and aeronautical (SwiftBroadband) markets. The BGAN upgrades will allow for an enhanced range of services and capabilities across the entire network.
“Thrane & Thrane have been instrumental in the on-going development of the BGAN system, and we are delighted to be working with them on this next stage of its evolution,” said Richard Denny, Senior Vice President of Global Networks & Engineering at Inmarsat. “We look forward to the improved functionality that this latest set of enhancements will deliver to users globally.”
“Thrane & Thrane played an important part in developing the entire BGAN infrastructure and by developing these new advanced features, we are continuing our role as a key technology player for Inmarsat’s global L-band networks,” said Kim Gammelholm, Senior Vice President, Systems, Thrane & Thrane. “This in turn helps us to provide our customers across the land mobile, maritime and aeronautical sectors with the most technically advanced and fit for purpose communications systems based on Inmarsat’s BGAN service.”
Thrane & Thrane Adds Aviator 200 to Expanded Product Line
Thrane & Thrane has added the Aviator 200 system to its connectivity product line for the aeronautical sector.
The Aviator 200 aims to provide a compact, lightweight system offering reliable, high-speed connectivity for a range of applications within the UAV, military and security sectors.

The Aviator 200 system simultaneously provides data speeds up to 200 Kbps and a single AMBE 2 channel for real-time video, data and voice relay links between the aircraft and ground control stations. Data and voice services can be accessed via wired or wireless connections built into system, which aims to alleviate the need for external wired and wireless routers.
“The launch of the Aviator 200 system is a break-through in terms of providing real-time communications for smaller and unmanned aircraft. UAV and other military, security and government aircraft operators are set to benefit from the capability to transfer more information via video, data and voice link from the aircraft to the station on the ground,” Thrane & Thrane Vice President Kim Gram said in a statement.
The new product launch follows Thrane & Thrane’s release of the Aviator 300 and 350 terminals, announced Aug. 24.
BGAN Takes A Bow @ AUVSI
Thrane & Thrane will be showcasing their portfolio of cutting-edge satellite communication solutions for use on unmanned land and maritime vehicles at this years AUVSI event.
Thrane & Thrane’s systems using the Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) service address the need for cost-effective, reliable, command, control and communications beyond line of sight and in the most extreme environmental conditions, enabling a wealth of new uses for unmanned vehicles. The company already enjoys leading positions in the Aeronautical, Land Mobile, and Maritime sectors with its solutions based on the Inmarsat BGAN service. The technology transfer to unmanned systems is already in place, with a new generation of BGAN products launched in the past year that use compact, rugged and lightweight antennas without compromising on performance or data capacity.
The Thrane & Thrane EXPLORER 325 is the company’s latest on-the-move BGAN solution for land vehicles. It features the smallest available vehicular BGAN antenna on the market, making it perfectly suited to unmanned vehicles. With data speeds up to 384kbps standard IP and up to 128kbps streaming, it works down to 5 degrees elevation, whether stationary or moving at speed across all types of terrain, making it suitable for a myriad of applications from bomb detection and disposal through to reconnaissance. For maritime unmanned vessels, Thrane & Thrane’s SAILOR 150 FleetBroadband is being presented as an ideal solution for installation aboard unmanned boats and other craft. Featuring the smallest and lightest FleetBroadband antenna to date it is a true IP solution offering data speeds capable of sending live video or offering full systems control of the vessel, regardless of the weather or sea state. To find out more about the entire range of BGAN solutions for all aeronautical, land mobile and maritime unmanned vehicle classes, visit Thrane & Thrane at Booth 733 during AUVSI 2010.
