Hughes Rewarded $58.7 Million Under U.S. Recovery Act Broadband Program
Hughes Network Systems, a provider of broadband satellite networks and services, announced that it has been awarded $58.7 million as the only national provider of high-speed satellite Internet service under the U.S. Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The Broadband Program, administered by the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service or “RUS,” is part of the government’s investments in broadband projects to bring jobs and economic opportunity to communities nationwide.
Federal Communications Commission reports that an estimated 14–24 million American households and small businesses do not have access to broadband connectivity via land-based services.

Recognizing this disparity in the country, Hughes pioneered the development of affordable high-speed satellite Internet access. The company now leads the market with over 540,000 subscribers on its nationwide HughesNet service, company sources said.
Through this award, the company plans to further accelerate the take-up by eligible new HughesNet subscribers.
Through its broadband investments, Hughes aims to provide every American, regardless of where they live, with an opportunity to participate in the digital world.
Hughes continues to invest significantly in satellite broadband. Most recently the company announced a major commitment to build and launch its next-generation JUPITER high-throughput satellite—a platform with over 100 times the capacity of today’s conventional satellites.
This satellite, which will be launched in 2012, will bring high-speed Internet service to millions of subscribers across North America, Hughes said.
Earlier in May Hughes also announced the formation of Hughes Network Systems Australia or “Hughes Australia,” demonstrating the company’s commitment to serve this strategic and rapidly growing market, particularly in the area of Ka-band satellite technology and services.
Hughes Books Lucrative Recovery Act Broadband Program Contract
Hughes Network Systems won a $58.7 million to provide high-speed satellite Internet service under The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and administered by the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS).
According to the firm, “this award is part of the government’s investments in broadband projects to bring jobs and economic opportunity to communities nationwide. The high-speed Internet infrastructure will help bridge the technological divide in communities that are being left in the 20th century economy and support improvements in education, healthcare, and public safety.”

“We congratulate USDA’s Rural Utilities Service under the leadership of Jonathan Adelstein in recognizing the essential role that satellite plays in bridging the digital divide in America, and are proud to be selected as the primary mover to make our high-speed Internet access available to the millions of unserved consumers and small businesses across the country,” CEO Pradman Kaul said.
Hughes wins $58.7M Internet services contract
Hughes Network Systems won a $58.7 million contract to provide high-speed satellite Internet service to areas of the country without access to broadband service.
The Agriculture Department contract was awarded to the company under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Hughes, a publicly traded firm, will serve as the only provider of high-speed satellite Internet service under the contract.

As many as 24 million American homes and small businesses don’t have access to broadband Internet through land-based services, according to a recent report by the Federal Communications Commission. Hughes offers a high-speed satellite Internet service, with more than 540,000 subscribers through its HughesNet service.
The project is expected to create tens of thousands of jobs and expand economic development and job opportunities in communities that have been lagging behind the tech economy.
