Globecomm Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: GCOM) has introduced an operational commercial X-band service offering to U.S. Military and Coalition Forces operating in Southwest Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Globecomm’s end-to-end X-band offering combines licensed teleport assets, a global fiber network, commercial X-band space segment, a redundant iDirect Internet Protocol (IP) services platform, and a wide range of satellite terminal equipment options.
This service provisioning will support the demand for increased U.S. Military and Coalition Forces’ bandwidth requirements in an IP-centric fashion. This commercial X-band service offering makes use of high power satellites that can support the deployment of small aperture antennas, including man-portable units in regions of the world that have very high usage requirements and are in critical need of additional bandwidth options.
Along with its global service offering, Globecomm provides a variety of X-band satellite terminal hardware ranging from the new TomCat ManPack to 0.77m and 1.2m Auto-Explorer self-aligning terminals up to 3.0m single-carrier and 4.0m multi-carrier, fixed hub earth stations. Globecomm’s global fiber network, with redundant and diverse connectivity to a European teleport, connects Globecomm’s service to many European points of presence, as well as to Globecomm’s Hauppauge, New York facility node, delivering robust IP connectivity, US-based voice termination services and US or European IP addresses.
Globecomm’s experience with the U.S. DoD and other international organizations delivers it with an extraordinary skill set that was used to create this solution. Globecomm provides the complete solution so the deployed unit in the field has one Network Operation Center to call to obtain assistance with their service between their computers to the hand off point at the Governments network.

Globecomm Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: GCOM), a leading global provider of satellite-based communications infrastructure solutions and services, informed that the Company has been awarded a contract from a U.S. Government Agency under the Commercial SATCOM Terminal Program (CSTP) which is part of the Project Manager (PM) Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) and Program Executive Office: Command, Control and Communications Tactical (PEO C3T) under the World Wide Satellite Systems (WWSS) Program to provide global SATCOM On-The Move (OTM) communications. The contract is valued at $17.7 million with options for significant additional quantities and services. Globecomm Systems will lead this effort for the U.S. Government providing program management and services. The Linkabit division of L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) will work with Globecomm Systems as a subcontractor responsible for development and production of the terminals.
Pursuant to the terms set forth in the contract, Soldier Node Extension Prophet (SNEP) Satellite Terminals will be integrated, configured, and provided along with training and logistical support services. The SNEP will operate in a hub-spoke and mesh architecture to provide beyond line-of-sight range extension to OTM users. The SNEP will employ the MPM1000 Net Centric Waveform Satellite Modem to provide Multi-Frequency-Time Division Multiple Access Bandwidth on demand technology for tactical mobile operations.
The SNEP terminals shall operate on commercial Ku band and military Ka band on the Wideband Global Satellite (WGS) Systems. The SNEP terminals are capable of delivering global SATCOM OTM communications and when deployed they will interoperate with commercial and military hub terminals employed in various modes of operation.
David Hershberg, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Globecomm Systems Inc., said: “This is a very important contract for Globecomm and represents a strategic entrance for Globecomm into Satellite Communications-on-the-Move systems. We are also very pleased to be working with L-3 Linkabit, further extending our relationship from other projects. This contract leverages Globecomm’s position as a WWSS prime contractor, its program management and satellite communications engineering know-how and L-3 Linkabit product development of state of the art solutions for the warfighter. While the competitive landscape for this procurement dictated a deviation from our normally demonstrated margins, we are excited to have the opportunity to become a major supplier in a new market and to work closely with L-3.”
“Linkabit provides multiple, turn-key, off the shelf terminal solutions that enable mobile and halted forces to collaborate, access GIG resources and exchange voice, data and video in a tactical environment,” said Elissa Seidenglantz, Vice President of Business Development and Strategy for L-3 Linkabit. “We are very proud to be part of the Globecomm team to provide this vital capability.”
