Space Command Eyes New Stopgap Tactical Communications Satellite

Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center is considering acquiring a new satellite that will bring secure communications to troops on the move, its commander said Nov. 10 at the Milcom conference. Pushing high-speed communications that can support streaming video and other features to troops who are traveling in vehicles has been high on the military’s wish list. However, the cancelation of the Transformational-Satellite program in 2009 has put that capability on hold.

One Horizon Group, announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary Horizon Globex is unveiling Horizon Call, a smartphone app for the most bandwidth-efficient mobile VoIP at ITU Telecom World.

The rise in mobile data traffic resulting from the rapid adoption of smartphones, mobile and video apps has placed tremendous pressure on operators’ networks, causing a noticeable increase in dropped calls.

Based on the company’s SmartPacket™ technology, Horizon enables mobile VoIP from only 2kbps compared to around 8kbps from other services.  It is fully compatible with digital telecommunications standards and is capable of interconnecting any phone system over IP – over mobile, fixed and satellite networks.

The Horizon Call app operates over EDGE, 3G, 4G/LTE, WiFi and WiMax networks and is initially available for the iPhone.  Horizon uses wireless bandwidth much more efficiently than other mobile VoIP apps, particularly in the way it handles silence.  Other VoIP services send the same amount of data in both directions regardless of whether someone is speaking or not.  Horizon detects silence and uses significantly less data.  In addition, the app offers the unique feature of allowing users to select from three different levels of call quality for optimal balance between quality and consumed bandwidth.

Other VoIP apps are also a potential threat to mobile operators’ call revenues.  The Horizon model is to partner with mobile operators to allow them to take the Horizon Call app to market, decide strategically how to position it within their portfolio, how to commercialise it, to customise it with their own branding and to control call routing to retain PSTN revenues.

“Our Horizon Call app couldn’t come at a better time to help mobile operators address the explosive growth in mobile data traffic,” said Mark White, CEO, One Horizon Group.  “And our model presents them with an option to compete against other mobile VoIP apps, while also helping to reduce call dropping and ultimately churn.”

Horizon Globex will be unveiling the Horizon Call app at ITU Telecom World in Geneva, from 24-27 October, in the Smart Work Pavilion, stand 4270.03.

CEOs from the world’s leading airlines, aircraft manufacturers, satellite companies, and aerospace associations, as well as heads of the world’s most prominent aerospace teaching and research facilities, will come together at the inaugural Global Aerospace Summit for four days of strategic level discussions, closed-door debates, networking, and site visits.

Hosted by Mubadala Aerospace, in partnership with Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat), the Global Aerospace Summit will take place 16-19 April 2012.

The Summit is an exclusive, invitation only, international forum bringing together international and regional senior executives from across the aerospace, aviation and space sectors for a four day event that will promote cross industry thought leadership and discuss future growth strategies.

The format combines two days of high level debate-led discussions on aerospace, aviation and space, followed by two days of field trips to aerospace and aviation facilities. There will also be closed door discussions, a private procurement meeting programme, and a careers development programme targeting vocational and professional development.

“We believe that this inaugural event will continue over time to become a cornerstone meeting for industry leaders within the global calendar,” said Homaid Al Shemmari, Executive Director of Mubadala Aerospace. “The decision to create and hold a global aerospace summit in Abu Dhabi demonstrates the growing importance of the Gulf Region to the industry as a whole, but also reflects the need for a dedicated, high level forum focused on the future of the overall aerospace industry. There is already significant interest in the Summit from industry leaders such as Airbus, Boeing, Emirates, Etihad, and The Engine Alliance, which underpins the decision to hold such an important Summit in the United Arab Emirates.”

Arab countries are expected to spend over US$100 billion on infrastructure development and US$200 billion on the purchase of new aircraft over the next 15 years. Chief among these are developments in the United Arab Emirates, which focus on using the region’s central location as a transfer point for passengers traveling between Europe, Asia and Africa.

Along with China and India, the Middle East is one of the top three fastest growing aviation markets. Scheduled travel is expected to rise 4.6 % per year to 2025, global air cargo capacity is expected to triple over the next twenty years compared to 2009 levels, growing at 5.9 % annually, and the private plane business maintaining healthy sales in the region.

James E. Bennett, CEO, Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) added: “The Summit provides an opportunity for global players across the entire value chain in the aerospace, aviation, and space industries to discuss the opportunities for the future in terms of growth, globalization, travel demand, and achieving profitability. We greatly look forward to this event, not only as a result of the sharing of experience and expertise, but also the commercial opportunities that it will bring to the industry.”

Jassem Al Zaabi, CEO, Yahsat, also commented: “The future of the space industry is exciting, both in terms of the rapidly evolving landscape for satellite communications businesses and the role that satellites can play in national economic development. We are in a new era for the commercial space industry and we anticipate high levels of interest in this area of discussion at Global Aerospace Summit 2012.”

Nicholas Webb, Director, Streamline Marketing Group, the event organizers, concluded: “The programme for the Summit has been designed to capture the interest of the key organisations operating across the aerospace, aviation and space sectors. As an invitation only event, we believe that the composition of the four day event will have an immediate and positive impact on the industry over the coming years.”
